Story

The Older Workers Employment Network (OWEN) has been given the opportunity to host an exhibition of its beneficiaries work during March at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull.

The show will focus on work that was created during OWEN’s 2008 innovation courses and exhibits will include works of art, comedy, drama and photography.

The exhibition will run from Saturday, 7 March - Tuesday, 24 March and all are welcome to go along and visit the exhibition for free.

OWEN will also hold an open day on the last day of the exhibition, 24 March, to allow people to get more information about the project and what it can offer, also giving them the opportunity to sign up.

Carol Ennis, was one of the first beneficiaries to take part in an OWEN art-based workshop.  Carol joined the project in 2008 and signed up to Artlink Humber's Cartwheels course.

Cartwheels is an Open College Network accredited practical training programme, designed for artists who would like to use their skills on community projects by acting as art workers or volunteers.

As part of her project, Carol taught art to the Girls Brigade and is now hoping to pursue a career in community arts.

Jackie Langley, OWEN project manager, said:  "The Ferens exhibition aims to showcase the hard work and dedication of OWEN beneficiaries over the last year.

“The feedback that we have received tells us that our innovative workshops are able to offer people something out of the ordinary - a chance to sample alternative career opportunities and boost their confidence levels at the same time."

OWEN's partners over the last year have included Hull based Artlink; EskimoSoup, organisers of the Hull Comedy Festival; Hull University and the Community Press Office, based in Grimsby.
